The Mynabirds
(Hair. Fierce)
I listen to the title track of The Mynabirds second LP Generals (Saddle Creek) and I feel like a badass. Like listening to Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Merrill Nisker (Peaches), Annie Clark (St. Vincent), and on and on. Laura Burhenn can be added to the list of 'hell yes my ladies, lets be BFFs'. Her voice, her hair, and most importantly, what this latest album currently represents for her.
In a recent interview she talks about her upbringing in Washington, D.C:
"I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian church. I quit going to church when i was 13 because the pastor got up and said that some gay people had been at our church the week before, and he wanted to make it clear that they were not welcome...There's also a pretty serious presence of the KKK in the town where I grew up. I had a bumper sticker on my car that said 'Fight Racism,' and some kid took it off and cut it in half so it just said 'Racism' and stuck it next to his Confederate flag sticker on the truck."
The album in essence is a protest album, "The point of this record is to show a transition, to show movement from anger and frustration to actually doing something and creating good around you." And if you're paying attention even in the slightest to what is happening you know we could all use a little less anger and a little more positive creativity.

Daughn Gibson...oh that voice
I was listening to KEXP yesterday when I heard the most beautiful and haunting voice since I first heard Matt Berninger from The National. The voice belongs to Daughn Gibson and he' recently released his first LP All Hell (White Denium). Take a listen to the single In The Beginning.
And one of my favorite tracks, Ray.
An interesting read on this former truck driver and the influence of country music can be found over at Pitchfork.

Big Deal
Things have been a little hectic so I haven't had much time for posting...which is sad. But oh happy day, check out these cuties from the UK!
I'm going to try and be better about constant postings in the coming weeks when things settle down a bit, but for now enjoy the striped shirt, swooopy hair, bangs and shy acoustic guitars of Big Deal.

Cute Patrick Watson. Father John Misty tonight!
(More beard-y)
Patrick Watson (and his band) released their fourth album last month Adventures in Your Own Backyard (Secret City Records). As of late I've been listening almost exclusively to that male lead, indi-folk sound and adding Patrick Watson to the rotation fits right in. He's super adorbs, born in CA but raised in Quebec, and will be in Seattle at the Columbia Theater on June 13th.
Album opener Lighthouse.
Tonight I'll be heading over to Neumos for the Father John Misty show. It's going to be cat-tastic! um..you know..
